Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Having only ten ingredients and ready in 30 minutes, this Creole shrimp and sausage soup is the perfect any day of the week dinner. You will feel good about feeding your family this protein-loaded soup!

Ingredients You Will Need

Shrimp: is very nutritious and fairly low in calories while providing a high amount of protein and healthy fats as well as vitamins and minerals. It has a sweet and succulent mild flavor, making it perfect for this Creole soup.

Kielbase: is a Polish sausage made of pork or beef and has a smoky flavor. I like Kiolbase brand that is Whole30 and Paleo friendly.

Hearts of Palm Rice: is typically made from one ingredient, hearts of palm (or the core of certain types of palm trees). It’s a great low-carb substitute in a Creole dish.

Ghee: incorporating ghee into this sauce adds a rich, nutty flavor. I love Fourth and Heart ghee.

Onion: yellow onion has a bolder flavor than sweet onions, but you can certainly use sweet if you prefer to balance out the spices in a sausage and shrimp soup.

Creole Sauce: is a flavorful, spicy, and tangy sauce from Louisiana traditionally served with seafood. I like Mesa de Vida sauces.

Chicken Broth: can be used or bone broth, which offers enhanced health benefits along with a richer flavor profile. I like Kettle & Fire for both.

Spinach: is a leafy green vegetable that’s high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, complimenting the flavors in this soup.

Coconut Cream: is ideal for dairy-free dishes, providing a creamy texture with a taste that is very mild and usually hidden by other flavors, perfect for a shrimp and sausage soup.

Salt: elevates the overall flavor of any dish. Always salt in moderation in accordance with your dietary preferences, especially in a flavorful Creole soup.

Instructions

Melt the ghee: in a large 5 quart pot.

Add the diced onion: cooking till onions are translucent.

Pour in: the broth and Creole sauce to start building the soup flavors.

Bring to a boil: then lower to a slow boil to continue cooking this delicious soup.

Add: the sausage and hearts of palm rice and simmer for five minutes so that the Creole spices infuse.

Add: the spinach and stir until wilted.

Carefully pour in: the coconut cream and add the salt, stirring till combined. It gives the dish its signature creamy texture.

Lastly: add your shrimp and simmer the soup for five minutes more. This brings together all the flavors perfectly for a Creole feast.

Enjoy! This Creole-inspired dish is sure to become a family favorite!

Recipe Tips and Tricks

Be sure to lower the heat from boiling: so the coconut cream does not curdle when being added to this shrimp and sausage soup.

Lemon: slices make a beautiful garnish and add a burst of tang to the soup.

Recipe Variations

Chicken apple sausage: or any sausage of your choice can be used in this soup. I use Kiolbasa beef sausage as it is Whole30 and Paleo friendly.

Kale: is perfect in this soup instead of spinach, adding to the Creole shrimp and sausage flavors.

Cauliflower rice: is an alternative for the hearts of palm rice. You can also use regular rice if you are not concerned with keeping this recipe Whole30 or Paleo friendly.

Red bell peppers: are delicious in this soup. I will dice them up and add them with the onions.

Storage Tips

You can store this Creole shrimp and sausage soup in the refrigerator for up to 3 days when placed in an airtight glass container. It also freezes well for up to 6 months.
